Almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we thank Thee for Thy unbreakable promises and for the bountiful provisions of Grace.
As Abraham believed and it was counted unto him for righteousness, grant us the same unstaggering faith to trust in Thy Word. Because Thou didst strengthen his faith, Thy servant considered not his own body dead, nor the deadness of Sara’s womb: but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; being fully persuaded that, what Thou hadst promised, Thou wast able also to perform.
Just as Thou didst cause Laughter to grow in the barren womb of Thy daughter Sara, grant that we also may always receive with meekness the engrafted word, that it may give birth to joy.
Just as Thou didst test our father Abraham by commanding him to offer his beloved son upon the mountain, Thou didst also resurrect Thy covenant promise in a figure by appointing a substitute. Grant, O Father, that when Thy words seem to have fallen to the hard earth and perished, and buried beneath much doubt; that we too would remember that Thou art the God who raises the dead.
Thou knowest our frame, that we are but dust. We confess our frailty before Thee. We acknowledge the weakness of our faith. So we beseech Thee to stir up our remembrance to the givenness of all things—Thy mercies which are new every morning, and the hands that receive them.
We are beset on every hand by manifold adversities—tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, and sword—but Thou, O Lord, hast set Thyself as our sure defense. Make us suspicious of our own strength, but teach us to lean hard upon Thine. If Thou art for us, none can stand against us.
By Thine own perpetual oath, Thou hast also pledged to safeguard every heart that hopes in Thy Word. Even from all eternity Thou hast decreed not to be God without us. Since, unlike Thy servant Abraham, Thou didst not spare Thine only Son, but didst deliver Him up for us all; grant that through the means of grace we may be assured that Thou wilt not fail to preserve Thine elect and bring us home at the last.
Truly, O Lord, the lines have fallen unto us in pleasant places, and we have a goodly inheritance. Thou hast lifted us from the dunghill and hast set us among princes. Thou hast maintained Thy covenant and raised us up from the dust of death to be Abraham’s seed. Thou hast shown us the path of life. Thou hast called us to dwell in Thy blessed presence where our joy is made full. Thou has set us at Thy right hand to delight in pleasures forevermore. Therefore our hearts are made glad, our glory rejoiceth, and our flesh shall rest in hope.
All this we pray to the honor and glory of God, who livest and reigneth together as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; One God, world without end. Amen
